Mountain hazards

Mountain weather hazards

Hazards apply at or above 300m, reflecting the more severe conditions which can occur at altitude.

hazard Strong Sunlight
Harmful UV levels from sunlight increase with altitude giving a greater risk of sunburn and eye damage, even on some overcast days. On breezy days, the cooling effect of wind on exposed skin may disguise any feeling of sunburn until it is too late. If there is snow cover, glare increases the effect of UV rays especially on the eyes. It is advisable to wear sun block, protective clothing such as a long-sleeved top and hat and have good quality eye protection.

hazard Poor Visibility
Poor visibility presents challenging route finding conditions. Visibility could be significantly less than 50 metres in all directions with few or no visual references, especially on featureless moors or plateaux. Distances become hard to judge and cliff or cornice edges can be difficult to recognise. These conditions require good navigational skills. There is a risk of white-out conditions when mist or fog is combined with extensive snow cover.
hazard Thunderstorms
Lightning is a significant mountain hazard which can result in serious injury or death. Mountain terrain often leaves one highly exposed to lightning strikes. Hail may give unpleasant conditions with torrential rain and localised flash flooding also possible, mainly in Summer months.

Additional weather information

Meteorologist's view

UV levels are forecast to be High, so appropriate sun protection is recommended. Any showers may lead to rapid changes in weather conditions, so it's advisable to carry waterproof clothing-especially if you're heading into southern or eastern areas.

Weather

After a cloudy start to the day across much of the park, northern regions develop some brighter spells and stay dry. Meanwhile further towards the south, outbreaks of rain are expected through the early morning, gradually sinking south to leave sunny spells across the park. These brighter spells may then lead to a risk of showers developing across the park, most likely in the south and east, with a low risk of thunder in any heavy downpours.

Chance of cloud-free hill tops

40% in the south at first, 80% in the north, becoming 90% for all by the afternoon.

Low cloud and visibility

Cloudy conditions in the south with occasional cloud obscuring hills above 300-400m and light to moderate rain reducing the visibilities to moderate or poor. Further north, scattered cloud largely staying well above the summits with good to very good visibilities. Through the morning, cloud clears away from the south leaving sunny spells for all with showers developing through the afternoon, especially in the south and east. Cloud bases mostly staying above summits, but falling below, to around 600-700m in heavy showers. Visibilities very good to excellent, dropping to moderate or poor in heavy showers.
